Personal Font

When I developed my font I based it on two criteria: 1) I wanted it to be mine, so I decided my handwriting would be a good way to manifest that.  2) I wanted it to display how I perceive myself, which I have always been an active person.

The problems I experienced though was that I have terrible handwriting, so I didn't necessarily achieve the second criteria because no matter how hard I tried I wasn't successful with every character.  Having said that though, I wanted a font that I knew was mine and could be distinguished by me and I wanted it to show action.  I chose not to use serifs because that's how I write, not because there is any underlying meaning.

I think my font would fall under the umbrella of transitional style.  Modern style focuses on verticality and my font has very little of that if none at all, while humanist style focuses much more on the thickness/thinness of the lines and that didn't come into play when I developed the font.

Design Evaluation

I decided to compare two sports drinks: All Sport and Gatorade.

All Sport:

This is my example of a poor design.  There is a lot going on with this package.  There are way too many colors with the bright blue outlined with red jumping out at you and almost enveloping you.  The yellow splash behind the words doesn't seem like it belongs especially with the blue and red words.  They don't leave any room for negative space and the positive space is overwhelming.
Considering Gestalt's laws:
Law of Similarity- Nearly everything stands out on this as its own thing, but not as a cohesive package.
Law of Pragnanz- Nothing about this is simple, there are too many colors and too many things happening.
Law of Continuity- My eyes try to follow the yellow splash behind the words, but none of it seems to flow very good.
Law of Closure- Once again looking at the splash I don't feel like I get any closure.

Gatorade:

The packaging on this Gatorade bottle is in my opinion a good design.

It's very simple: you have the logo lightning bolt cutting through a very simple G.  There is good use of negative space and I like how it's clear so that the drink itself is the background.  You get horizontal lines with the "GATORADE" on top then on the side you get vertical lines with the flavor and other facts.  Those two things provide stability for the design.
Considering Gestalt's Laws:
Law of Similarity- As I mentioned you get vertical and horizontal lines and you will generally group them separate.  That's what is happening here with the name, flavor and facts.
Law of Pragnanz- This is the most prominent thing about this design.  The logo is very simple, there is only the white and orange colors then the background is the drink itself.
Law of Continuity- There is nothing about this that causes me to feel like there is bad flow.
Law of Closure- With this design I feel like I know what the product is.
